The divisional enigma -Vargas or Amashas

The Vargas or Amshas are an enigma in themselves. Not extensively elaborated in the classics, the Amshas have been a mystery that generations of Jyotishis have tried to unravel with each of them contributing their own little bit.

The Amshas, however, are very sensitive to the accuracy of the birth time. Therefore, I refrain from using them too heavily.

Nonetheless, below is a collection Vargas tips and tricks that I have collated over time that I do use from time to time.

Hora or D2

Since all the planets in the D2 get divvied up into either the Sun’s (Leo) or Moon’s (Cancer) Hora, this chart can be use to guage the balance of the masculine and feminine energy within the native.

Personality

This can be done as follows:

  1. The Hora Lagna is the first indication. Leo rising in the D2 indicates a masculine bent vs. Cancer rising a feminine one.
  2. Secondly, if the Hora Lagnesh (Sun or Moon) are in their own sign in the Hora Lagna then that adds another notch to the determination.
  3. Lastly, Number of planets in each Hora is another indication. e.g. An individual with 7 planets in Leo (in D2) and 2 planets in Cancer is definitely more likely to have a predominantly masculine personality.

Wealth

If a planet’s gender (Males – Su, Ma, Ju / Females – Ve, Mo / Neutral – Sa, Me, Ra, Ke) matches the planet’s Rashi gender (Odd Rashis are male, Even are female) in D1 and additionally matches Hora gender (Leo being male, Cancer being female) then the planet is favorable with regards to increasing the native’s wealth.

Addtionally, if the Lagna Rashi gender matches the Hora Lagna gender, it is a favorable for wealth.

If the Sun’s Hora is dominant (more planets in Leo) the wealth is likely to be self-made. The Moon’s Hora rising on the other hand is likely to endow wealth by way of inheritance.

Drekkana or D3

Drekkana’s I feel are the Swiss army knife of the jyotiSa arsenal. Very powerful yet absolutely undervalued and underutilized.

Navamsha or D9

Pushkara Navamshas

Pushkara Navamashas are specific and special Navamsha placements that are considered very beneficial for the Grahas placed in those Navamshas. Differently put, they are hand picked padas of the 108 padas that are considered more nuturing and therefore beneficial for the Grahas. For the Jyotishi though memorizing them can become challenging. The below table presents a simplified mechanism for the memorization.

D60

Life event predictions can be made by using transits in conjuction with the D60 chart. In this case, however, the accuracy of the D60 doesn’t matter since this technique only care about the raZi and not the bhAvas of the D60 chart.

Method (by V. P. Goel):

  1. Indentify the Bhavesh pertaining to the life event in question the D1. e.g. 7th lord for relationships.
  2. Then, look at the sign that Graha is placed in, in the D60.
  3. If there is a major planet (SA, JU, SKA) is transiting that sign in D60 or conjunct the sign lord, it will materialize that event.

The Lagna of a divisional chart tells us “who we are” in that area of life.
