Marakas – The killer planets in Vedic Astrology

Marakas (the killer planets) and timing of death are probably the most feared topics in Jyotish and probably rightly so. Death and dying are never a topic one seeks to ponder upon and yet it is one that most of us keep circling back to time and again.

In addition to the controversial topics they are, I have my very own reasons for not engaging or pursuing queries regarding death and dying. At the same time, Marakas aren’t a topic any serious practitioner of Jyotish can turn a blind eye too and hence here I share the little that I do know.

Planets that rule or occupy the 7th (12th from 8th house of longevity) and 2nd (7th from the 8th house) houses in the birth chart are considered Marakas. Right away, I would like to mention that just because one is running a Mahadasha or Bhukti of a Maraka, doesn’t mean he/she is facing imminent death. All it means is that given a myriad of other factors, these planet do have the potential of causing bodily harm and in extreme cases death.
